Prep time: 20 minutes
Rise time: 1–1½ hours
Bake time: 25–30 minutes
Ingredients
For the dough:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup melted butter
- 1 large egg
- ½ teaspoon salt
For the filling:
- ⅓ cup softened butter
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
For the glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Preparation
In a bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Add sugar, melted butter, egg, and salt. Gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms.
Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Punch down the dough and roll it into a large rectangle (about 12×16 inches).
Spread softened butter over the dough. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon together and sprinkle evenly over the buttered surface.
Roll the dough tightly into a log. Shape into a ring and pinch the ends together. Place on a greased baking sheet or in a round pan. Make small cuts around the ring for a decorative look.
Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.

Why They’re Called “Ring-a-ling”
