Yield and Timing

Serves 4–6 people
Prep time: 15 minutes
Bake time: 10–15 minutes

Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ small onion, finely diced
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Garlic Bread Base:

  • 1 loaf French bread, sliced lengthwise
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1½ cups shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese

Preparation

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and onion until browned. Drain excess grease.

Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.

In a small bowl, mix softened butter and minced garlic.

Spread the garlic butter evenly over both halves of the French bread. Place on the baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes to lightly toast.

Remove from oven and spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over the toasted bread halves.

Sprinkle shredded cheese generously over the top.
