Old-Fashioned Spaghetti

This is the kind of old-fashioned spaghetti many of us grew up with. No gourmet ingredients, no complicated seasoning blends — just ground beef, tomatoes, and pantry staples simmered into a hearty, comforting sauce.

It’s simple, filling, and dependable. The kind of dinner that brings everyone to the table.

Yield and Timing

Serves 6 people
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano (optional but traditional)
  • 1 pound spaghetti noodles

Preparation

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Drain and set aside.

In a large skillet or pot over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until browned. Drain excess grease.

Add minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.

Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Mix well.

Add salt, pepper, and sugar. Simmer uncovered for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and flavors blend.

Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Serve sauce generously over cooked spaghetti.
